Care Guide
Short routines that keep wood, leather, wool, brass and stone looking the way they did when they arrived.
Everyday care
Most marks come off with a soft dry cloth and a little patience. A few habits keep solid wood, stone and upholstery looking as they did on arrival.
- Dust with a dry, soft cloth — working with the grain on solid wood
- Blot spills straight away instead of wiping them across the surface
- Use coasters and mats under drinks, plants and hot dishes
- Lift pieces rather than dragging them, so joints and legs stay tight
By material
- Solid oak and hardwoods
- Wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately. Keep away from radiators and direct sun, which dry the timber unevenly. An oiled finish can be refreshed with a thin coat of furniture oil once or twice a year.
- Leather
- Dust regularly — leather wears best when it is used. Keep it out of direct sun, and wipe marks with a damp cloth and mild soap. Condition the hide only once it starts to feel dry.
- Wool and jute rugs
- Vacuum without a beater bar, and rotate the rug every few months so wear and fading stay even. Blot spills with a clean cloth, and use a mild wool detergent for anything stubborn.
- Brass and metal
- Brass develops a patina as it ages. Leave it if you like the warmth, or polish with a brass cleaner if you prefer it bright.
- Glass and stone
- A non-ammonia glass cleaner and a soft cloth are enough. Keep abrasive pads and acidic cleaners away from marble and limestone.
What to avoid
- Abrasive pads, scouring powders and silicone-based polishes
- Standing water on wood or stone — dry up quickly around sinks and planters
- Direct heat from hot dishes, candles or hair dryers near lacquered surfaces
- Household bleach and solvents on leather, wood or metal
- Prolonged direct sunlight, which fades fabrics and dries timber
Light and climate
Furniture is happiest in conditions we are comfortable in: neither parched nor damp. Aim for humidity around 40–60%, and keep pieces back from air-conditioning vents, radiators and windows that catch the afternoon sun.
If something needs attention
Tell us what happened and send a photo. Pieces can usually be repaired, re-oiled, re-glued or re-covered rather than replaced, and we will tell you which route makes sense for the piece and its finish.
Care questions, replacement parts or a repair — send us a photo of the piece and we will advise on the spot.
